What type of damage does defense help avoid or mitigate?

I am level 154 and using lvl 100 lux offhand firey axe but equipped askold hammer
And it seems to be better by a little bit and funner have strengh at like 350 is that normal?

If being more on the damage side is spear or hammer/axe better ?
Dropping rupture obviously if you go spear however i saw someone say something about skewer being effective with no points in it.

I know some of these are play style etc but I would like some feedback if possible

Oh ya almost forgot does unarmed combat effect pummel at all?

Defense helps you to avoid auto attacks.
str at 300-350 (with bonus) is good.
you get best dps with hammer or axe. Hammer is slower and more dmg (I prefer axe).
I don't know about skewer.
pummel is only affected by the skill points in it and your str. So if you use no weapons its lower than with weps (if you use an offhand with str bonus).

300-350 str like eze said is good, dont go over that
best dps is an axe, medium speed high dmg, rupture
hammer is also good, higher dmg but lower speed
the only use of skewer is the casting time, its not affected by the wep, so if ur using a slow spear (such as anc wyrmbone or ymir), skewer will hit the same as melee dmg just much faster, 7 energy cost at lvl 1, fast cooldown (very fast)

pummel isnt affected by wep's dmg or delay, only str and skill pts

why is this skill good? fast casting no matter what wep, low energy cost and very fast cooldown
in other words, if u can have the right gear for pummel, it'll be a deadly skill, i love to see that it usually hits the most for me, and its very fast

I personally love pummel and do use an axe however does unarmed ability effect pummels hit/miss?

we both suggested an axe, i really suggest one over a hammer, i find the speed too slow, and i love to nuke dmg faster, altough its good with double attack

Hammers are for fat people.
