Re: Scamming Scammers

I have a question for admins. If someone is attempting to scam out accounts and they're doing one of those "Oh, you give me your information and I'll give you mine" things, are we allowed to trick them into giving us their information and scam THEM? I was wondering if I would be justified in doing that. I welcome feedback from anybody, but some Admin input would be helpful.
Thanks!

Scamming a scammer makes you as worse as him. For example: You murder a murderer, is that justified? No, it makes you as worse as the murderer.
Tell that to nations with capital punishment. I live in America where we execute murderers. Is the American government worse than mass murderers?

I think the morality is that you need to be reasonable and justified and not hasty in these irrevocable decisions. If it weren't necessary to wrong people who wrong others there would be no need for jails or court systems.

The best way would be for admin to handle it but this would require several full time employees - something that OTM cannot afford to do. In the absence of OTM doing anythin it is justifiable to take whatever action is necessary to get back the items and or harass the offender. Just be sure to limit any collateral damage to anyone not involved and to be relatively objective about your actions.

Well I would think that scamming him and taking his account would prevent him from scamming other people

Sadly the majority of the scammers use lvl1 accounts that they make specific to a scam then dispose of. For example a clannie was scammed by a lvl1 with nearly the identical name as another clannie who typically borrows the stuff - it looked the same on a small screen. Asked to borrow a few items that were worth about 2m total. Then scammed. We know who it is because the items were unique enough but it's very hard to do anything.

Another popular scam is to use lvl1 and impersonate OTM employees and try and browbeat people's account info out of em.

If we could scam his main account I would be all for it since it would teach a good lesson and help compensate for the items.

Well if it was a big scammer, I would scam him (his main) then drop all his stuff and never scam again.
Don't drop because support can give that back. Gotta trade but then you pull someone in who could possibly be banned ... it starts to get tricky. I'd steer clear but that is just my personality.
Yes borrow a friends device who dosent play. Or otherwise obtain a temporary device. Scam on it. Create lvl1 and trade/mail them. Then drop. Don't use any home or other wifi you play on regularly. Do not log any accounts you care about on this friends device. There is basically no way to track this from OTM side. Maybe if you were in a unique part of the world but a major city no way.

If you like messing with stuff and have a lot of time on your hands you can spoof your device id. This saves the time and hassle of borrowing a device. Again you must cover your IP address tracks. This isn't CSI they will not care and have no idea.
