All classes are essential IMOWhile there is pleny to complain about about being a mage, I actually really enjoy the class. Basically, the way I see it, there are three purposes to a mage: 1) distance dps 2) debuffs/lures and 3) energy creation. I don't think any class is essential (except for combatting end game bosses of course), but each adds something helpful. To me, mages are to offense what druids are to defense. As a mage, in a level group with a ranger or rogue, they LOVE my assassin lure. It increases their kill rates considerably. Additionally, the supplemental nuke dps that I drop on a mob also increases the kill rates. And that high level distance dps helps a lot on bosses as well, as someone said above.
When druids are working overtime and their lux can't keep up, I keep them going with a boost and quickly they are back to healing like a machine. Other folks do that same thing with sacrifice for instant energy.
No class is essential. Even a druid can be substituted with a ranger and a high light heal. But druids are far more efficient at healing and help reduce damage with wards, making defense a lot less messy. Mages are similar. While other classes can lay out the offense, mages make a groups offensive power more efficient and offense a lot less messy.
Yes, I'm sure every group you are in for every action you engage in, whether it be grinding, small bossing, or anything else, has one of every class. All classes are essential IMOWhile there is pleny to complain about about being a mage, I actually really enjoy the class.
