Re: Easter Patch?? Will there be one??? Post ideas here !!

#13
As much as I enjoy 'Holiday Events' (and I do enjoy them), designing and implementing them takes valuable resources and man-hours away from designing, testing, and releasing the long-awaited Update 3 - which is the main priority for OTM at the moment... Any effort to rush out an 'Easter Patch' would only further delay the release of this update.

That being said, IF something like this were to be added either this spring or the next, I agree with gboy2 who suggests that all special events should fit in with the overall Ancient/Celtic/Medieval/Pagan theme of the game. For example, here is some info on Celtic holidays taken from http://www.packrat-pro.com/celts/celtholidays.htm:

Ostara
Traditional date: March 21
Actual astrological date: March 20 in 2008
First day of Spring, actual Vernal or Spring Equinox, the night and day stand equal
Alban Eiler, "Light of the Earth"
Celebrates the the birth of spring, rebirth
Time of planting
Rare day of magic due to the rare balance of light and dark
Colours: Red and green or red and yellow
Evolved into Easter

Beltaine or Beltane
Traditional date: April 30 and/or May 1
Actual astrological date: May 5th in 2008
Midpoint between Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice
The second largest and most important festival, great tribal gatherings
The beginning of the light half of the year, exact opposite day of Samhain
Third Celtic fire festival (male)
Old Irish "Beletene" means "bright fire"
Gaelic "Bealtaine" means the month of May
Celtic word Beltaine mean fires of Bel
"Light of the Earth"
Time of rebirth
House fires were extinquished and relit from hilltop bonfires
Need-fires are built, walk between for purification
Bonfires of sacred wood are lit in honor of the Celtic god Beli
The veil between worlds (Shield of Skathach) is thin, allowing faeiries to cross over
Colours: Blue, pink, yellow, green
Evolved into May Day

(I don't vouch for the accuracy of the above information, but with my limited background in Celtic folklore, the above seems reasonably accurate and could provide fodder for 'holiday events'...)

They don't have to be strictly 'by the book', hiring some historian with esoteric knowledge of this time period to design the event, and they could have some more modern things like an egg-laying-bunny - but lets not go overboard celebrating purely Christian holidays in a game whose setting likely pre-dates the spread and adoption of Christianity across this part of Europe!

Personally, I like the idea of celebrating traditional Celtic festivals and retaining their distinctive names, with the aim of having all the main ones appearing in-game by next year. I doubt if Easter will make the cut this time around, but in the future months when everyone is bored with Update 3 and begging for Update 4, this type of patch makes a lot more sense...
