Quest Experience When Grouped

#1
Hi there,

Is the experience gained from the storyline quests credited to the individual solely?

I'm going to be helping out someone who has neglected the storyline. I'd like to group with him as we run him through the story and get him up to speed. I'd like to group, as group chat is much easier to read than whisper, and it would also allow us to see each other on the map should we get separated, as he may run off chasing a quest mob.

I want to make sure that I won't be stealing his experience, though, as he completes each quest.

Can someone confirm that even in a group, these quests are individually based? Or should we disband the group each time he is about to turn in the quest items so that he gets 100% of the experience due to him?

Thanks for your help.

I'm using my brain/educated guess right now, but I'm pretty sure he would get the do only and not you since he is only one getting the items/talking to npc's/doing the actual quest.

If you are still worried I would try it with one of the simple quests like the one where you must find 4 mining picks in crookback cave since you can do that quest many times over.

I think as Scary has said, the person handing in the quest will get full experience so don't worry about staying grouped. Nice to see some people still help the noobs :)

just confirming -

The quests you hand in are individual because the game thinks you did it by yourself even if you did group. the exp you get from the quest is the same for everyone. BUT when you group to kill mobs for the quests, the experience and the items doesent go to the person who needs it, because it is still random - for example, i am helping a level 30 with his shale quests to kill sashmen, and i am the one killing them, it is random who gets the drop. i could get it twice, and then he could.

Hope it helps a little.

Thanks everyone. Ya, my guess is also that the quest exp is granted only to the person with the quest, and not split, and am sure you are all correct. It wouldn't make sense to split this exp., but thought I'd check to make sure.

Thanks, Saxo. Ya, I was pretty shocked to hear that he hasn't really done much of the storyline. We're killing boars, yet I don't think he's even killed Hagvar. I realized his problem when he mentioned that he couldn't access the merchant at the tents in Shale.

Good idea Scary. I could get him to hand in some Fettles just as a test. I think TheDarkSide's logic is sound though, so I will probably skip it.

Thanks for reminding me of that, TheDarkSide!! I hadn't even thought about non-transferable drops... I should have, though, as I have three of Luther's heads sitting in my backpack from helping out someone on that quest  . Might disband during fights to make sure he gets the items.

Thanks again, and have a great night,
D

My understanding is the when a player completes a quest by talking to an NPC after completing an objective, the exp goes to the individual who is completing the quest and that person alone.

Since many of the 'storyline' quests involve the collection of non-tradable items, it may be beneficial to not 'group' with someone you are helping by simply supporting them with heals, buffs, killing off non-quest mobs that are harassing the quester, etc. Noone needs 20 skirmishers sashes in their inventory!

On another, somewhat related note...

Exp for killing mobs is split between group members, although I am not sure of the exact formula used. If memory serves, it is basically a 50-50 split, and for each additional person in the group there is a 5% experience bonus added to the total received, which is then split (i.e. 2 people killing a boar would get the same TOTAL exp for killing a boar as they would solo, PLUS 5%. Three people in group would net a 10% bonus, etc.). This is meant to encourage grouping, and even though you still get less exp per kill than you would solo, this slight bonus and efficiency of grouping is sometimes preferable. It is also worthwhile to mention that if people in group are of different levels, then the amount of experience earned varies depending on who gets credit for the kill. If the higher level player in the group gets the kill, then the game uses their level to calculate exp earned - therefore the group gets less than if the lower level party member gets the kill.

I am not sure on this anymore either, but if the gap between the levels of people in a group is really large then some players in a group may not be able to earn ANY exp. Play around with different configurations and you will see for yourself how it works.

Wow thanks for that Shag. I actually didn't know how exp bonuses worked. Now I feal more informed and enlightened. Thanks! :)

I just want to add a further clarification about group xp.

The amount of xp you get for kills is based off of the person who got the kill, so if they are higher level than the mob, they pay the penalty and then everyone splits the xp (plus bonus). Any group members who are higher level than the killing player pay the additional percentage penalty on the xp that they would if they killed it themselves.

This means that, for instance, if you are a level 90 player and kill Chillmist while in a group, your zero xp (or close to--probably worth 15 or something) will be split amongst the group. If, however, a level 70 player in your group got the kill, while you'd still get your nearly zero xp, they would get a significant amount, and anyone in the group who is lower than level 90 also winds up with more xp. So if you really want to maximize group xp, find a way to have the lower-levels get the kill.
