After getting the Shield of Bastion i discover that having 547 armour really helps( try not to laugh all you tanks). I know that compared to other classes 547 is a joke but it sure helps when soloing. In a group i trade it out for my Focus of the Mystic. I do have full DL but any suggestions how I can get even more armour. Guess it would have to be a ring or? Figure I can never have too much armour even though a mage is apparently not supposed to have any. Thanks for any suggestions.

armor for a mage is important since they basically dont have any
you can only use rings for armor as far as i know and its not even worth it
better get some nice skill rings (+6 or something)

The reason why I dislike the shield idea is because you'll eventually get the dragonlord off hand. The focus, chaos resist and the skill it provides is much better than any armour bonus you could hope to achieve. Better get used to it, and set up your vitality:focus ratio as well as skills, rather than receive a nasty surprise.

As deathreaver said, the hrung armour rings are a source of armour and should be easy to get. (No one wants them) Hrung bracelets can also give armour, as well as some new luxury items (the 1 mill ammy and 750 brac of Halloween are an example). As a mage, you are much better off investing your jewellry space into skills. I receive a total of 54 skill points from my jewelry alone, and if I were to try to get more armour from jewelry, my DPS would be severely impacted.

There are times when i thought about using a shield for better survivabilty. Although i prefer the focus and energy from a typical mage offhand and i didnt think just an offhand shield would help. I did once try 750 defense, i didnt change my stats, i equipped 3 wintercraft armour pieces that gave 250 defense each. I loved dodging a lot more attacks. but then i got full dl and went back to dps.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I understand what you are saying, do realize that the shield is a temporary measure until I get better stuff but it really helps me a lot now. Never could solo trolls until i got the shield. Something very cool about me standing there with my shield knocking down the big guys. Just hate hitting them with my book, seems so lame. Wish I had a wand or fire dagger or something awesome. Wish OTM would think about stuff like this. I mean really, hitting a troll with a book, I mean really!
