They used the Doppler effect in the satellite data sent by the airplane engines to locate the approximate location of the airplane. Given where it was it would not have had fuel to land anywhere but in a remote part of the Indian ocean. Given that it was most likely a bad landing, and no one has been rescued for weeks, and there is no land, and seas are quite bad in the area.... Well there is a chance let's hope they are all powerball winners.
