It's not a str or dex ranger its a matter of stats. Your fixated on certain things that just dont matter
So it's a matter of stats... but not str/dex? You must be a focus/vit ranger then...
How does being fixated on craptastic skills not matter? That's the biggest complaint about rangers in general!
As a mid-level ranger (140) I can tell you my experience... I've tried a few different builds/stats.
Sadly, the most effective build right now is almost pure auto. I use Sharpen, Sharp Shot (Royal Ring/Anc. Vambraces makes this bearable), Steady Aim, Light Heal, 20+ Rapid Shot (good for starting off a lix/bossing without lix).
Using Earth tali, adam bow (still trying to find a deal on wyrm), +6 crush brace (I know pierce is ideal), Aggy brace of Barbed Shot (75 dex, 250 ranged) Full frozen with ancient beastbone gloves for the Sharp damage, two +40 fire damage rings, hate ring, Royal Sharp Shot ring, +20 fire damage sunfire charm.
Str - 305, Dex 355, Vit 280. 2064 HP, 464 Energy, 2494 attack, 710 defense, 1058 damage, 417 armor.
When leveling I use haste/sk/hp regen. Autos range anywheres from 300-475ish top end. Sharp Shot ranges anywhere from 400-900, often times it gets evaded. I auto more than anything, with a SS thrown in here and there. I prefer leveling with my lure mage because without, it takes a lot longer to kill and my damage goes down quite a bit. I gain an additional 250+ dmg on average per auto hit this way.
The thing that makes the mid game ranger suck is the lack of good skills to use. Besides Sharpen, Steady, Light Heal which should be staple skills for any ranger... the rest don't quite have a place on a leveling build due to lack of goodness. Sure they might be better in a group setting, but then you're also limiting yourself to only group leveling.
Here's a rundown of why I think that mid game ranger skills need a revamp:
Longshot - Unless you BOLA (who uses this when lvling?), or are in a group where you aren't the main attraction, a one shot semi-hard hit isn't worth the points investment.
Explosive Arrow - C'mon... HIGH energy cost and not very effective.
Barbed Shot - Slow cast time, DoT could be better
Conceal/Camo - ......... ...... ....... .... ......yea.
Defensive Spikes - I've ONLY used this while using a spear build AND having Assassin's Lure up. Even at 35/30 on the same level mob it does like 20-40 dmg. W/Lure It hits 100+ top end.
Double Shot - Kinda pointless while on a haste lix due to cast time.
Sharp Shot - Gets evaded quite a bit, damage fluctuates a LOT. Quick recast, fast cast.
Entangle - Used it only while being a spear build and only used it on 3* or greater mobs or PvP... the recast is suuuuuupppppppeeeerrrr sssslllllloooooowwwww.
Longshot is great up until level 100ish because with a Royal/Grand ring, you can take a HUGE chunk of health from one shot which makes it viable at lower levels. As a mid-level ranger I find very few of these skills useful. I'm going to try adding in Barbed Shot in my build since I have a brace now, working on getting a ring, to see if it fairs any better.
DL armor is nice as it adds extra elemental damage and free skill points. The problem is, getting from 100-150 while using mediocre skills. At 110 I switched to an Aggy spear and used that until 130+ because I wasn't happy with the skills of a bow. Funny thing is, when I was a spear build I won more duels than with a bow. End-game is a lot different than mid-game rangers. Builds are more boss oriented, Longshot becomes viable again as you're not the main target. I've thought about quitting my ranger probably 9+ different times only to come back to pushing through only because they're needed on my world AND DL will be easier due to less rangers.
