Fire Bolt or Freeze

#1
Hey guys,

I am trying out an ice mage and I have read different opinions on skills. Some people say to put some points into fire bolt for extra DPS during cooldown, while others recommend using freeze to keep from taking damage during cooldown.

Which should I choose? Has anyone actually tested the effectiveness of both options, or do players just pick the one they like the best?

Wouldn't the best be the more effective one...?

Anyways, it depends on you and your survivability. If you're happy eating through pots and having a strong energy shield, maybe fire bolt is for you (although I wouldn't recommend it since it hits pretty crap without lure). It does fill in the gaps between your skill hits, but personally something like frostbite might be more efficient (and easier to get rings for).

Freeze is a great spell for soloing. That's about it. If you're in a group most of the time, forget about it as it will just break on a mob after a group member hits it. If you're going to be soloing, freeze is an amazing skill to let skills cool down and sigils do their work.

A mage at heart... Fire mage that is.

+1 to what Armo said about solo/group leveling.

I'd like to add that if you want to go for pvp ice mage, I recommend freeze because that allows for this skill rotation:
1. Ice lure
2. Ice shards
3. Ice blast
4. Freeze and take no damage while your spells are cooling down
5. Run away some distance (if dueling warrior or rogue)
6. Ice shards

Thank you guys for your input. I plan on solo leveling (at least at first) and even though Freeze is not beneficial for group leveling or bosses, you could simply not use it, or only use it when being targeted (just like Riposte on a rogue). I do have several Frostbite tomes and rings, so at least that is another option.
