Yes, the players are not trapped inside a game. Kirito is playing GGO because he heard that there was a weapon inside the game that could kill people irl, not just in the game. Hence the first 5 min of the episode.

Well, he didn't go in because he heard about it. If it was up to him he wouldn't go in, but Kikuoka Seijirou (Member of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, VR World Division) has him investigate the case about Death Gun and Zexcess and the other dude getting killed.

Yup, and it all depended on the success of the "Battle of the Gods" franchise, they sorta used it to see what interest people still had in it, which is more than ever. I'm hoping they continue the story from Battle of the Gods since the whole Battle god for one dimension is really cool and Goku has a lot of ass kicking to do.
