The Spear Wielding Ranger (bow secondary)

#1
Here's my attempt at a somewhat updated spear ranger build.

Currently I am level 162 and have been a spear ranger off and on since level 1.

Gear:
Spectral Talisman of Midnight (could be swapped for Comrak DMG set)
Aggy Brace - +5 Light Heal, 250 spear ability, 75 Str (x2)
Comrak Bladeleaf Charm
Comrak Bladeleaf Ring
Comrak Ironroot Ring
Haste Ring (swapped for Aggy damage ring while lixed)
45 Magic damage Aggy ring
Level 160 Ancient Wyrmbone Spear
Fiery axe of Conquest

Stats:
1090 Str
60 Dex
155 Vit

2160 Health
459 Energy
2722 Attack
270 Defense
1924 Damage
493 Armour

Skills:
Double Attack - Up to 10 levels above
Sharpen Weapons
Light Heal
Rapid Shot
Bolas
Skewer level 1

The layout is quite simple since the skills are quite limited DPS wise. There are other options for other spear builds, such as substituting in Defensive Spikes (great when accompanied with Assassin's Lure), Camouflage - if you don't want to pull other mobs in since you will be up close and personal. Entangle - to slow down the attacks of those pesky 3-4* mobs.

I opted for Bolas as my other skill. You will find that as a spear ranger, you have some left over points to play with. I did this so that I could still use a bow and help the clan , or when soloing low level bosses in the OW. I have enough Bolas to be able to bola pretty much any OW boss up to level 140, more if I chose to equip a bola ring or get my hands on an Aggy bola bracer. Whatever route you decide will depend on what you find best for your and your clan's needs.

The way I play my spear wielding ranger is quite simple. I Sharpen Weapons, run to the mob, auto attack, double attack, auto attack, skewer, auto attack, Rapid Shot, unequip haste ring and replace with another damage or skill ring then right before the mobs dies I'll pop my XP lix. Rapid Shot at level 35 lasts a good 23+ seconds so by the time I get to my next mob, I have already, or am about to pop my Heroic Haste. Once hasted, it is all a matter of rinse and repeat of the skill combos.

Currently with this setup, soloing in the level 161-165 Firbolgs room, I am getting 1 3/4 bar per lix. I have asked around and that seems pretty legitimate for soloing leveling, especially as a ranger. I was dual boxing a lure mage, but found that I went through restos like a crack addict goes through crack. I have then switched over to using a druid support, and am still getting 1 3/4 bars per lix, before I was just at 2+ bars per lix.

With this build, you will take a lot more damage, unless you have a Comrak set with Dex added in. I can kill Firbolgs fairly quickly, even the 3-4* ones. With full DL soon, the damage output should be even better.

This build/play style isn't for everyone, nor will people say it is the most efficient. I do enjoy walking around with a spear and axe, getting huge hits though. I did hear the comment from a rogue while camping a spider boss..."I've never seen a ranger hit that hard! what is your str?" This build allows me some really good damage, and what I feel to be good XP (takes about 5.5 Super Knows to level) while still being able to equip my bow and regen quiver for bossing in the OW, or wanting to stay out of range from AoE type bosses. Even though I have 0 actual bow skills, Rapid Shot still gives the bow some good umph when I want to sit back a little and enjoy not being hit every 5 seconds by an AoE.

I have used Defensive Spikes in this build with a Royal Ring, which did great damage with a level 24 Assassin Lure, but I needed bolas to help the clan out more. Camo I used when leveling at Blackstones because they're so close, and hit so frickin' hard.

Some have said not to use a spear while being a ranger until you get a sweet level 180 Mordy spear... but even with a level 160 slowish spear, I have been able to get the kill on some XP mobs over rogues in the group.

Hopefully this will help some rangers venture out and try something a little different.

Disclaimer: Spear rangers aren't meant for everyone, I am also not saying one is better than the other. This is just my personal experience and thoughts on the matter.
