Since its almost winter time iam kinda partial to blue sapphires, clear diamonds and white gold.
Go with a design thats flowing and not too geometric. All jewelry should be made custom and jewelry for women should flow well with thier natural body curves. Go to your jeweler and tell them what materials and type of design you want. Also think about a braclet instead of a ring/and or necklace.
Rings should be reserved for proposals or married couples. But necklaces are safe and so are braclets and earrings.

Also take a picture of your gal to the jeweler to help them find a piece that is right for her. Think about hair/eye color as well, blue and white might clash with her natural features and the jeweler should lead you in the right direction. The amount of thought and detail you put into a piece of jeweler should reflects your feeling and effection twords that person.

If your rich then dont worry about the money. Its really fun having creative imput when making a piece of jewelry if its custom then it can be priceless art someday. Just spent what you feel comfortable with, remember it is a gift and if you dont marry her someday then all is lost when you part ways.

Quite good advice, quite good advice!

important you advise against a ring also. especially as your clear diamond IS a PROPOSAL in its own right.

One to add though.
Basic design choices like geometric versus fancy and gold versus white gold/silver lies deep in the tastes and personality of the resp. girl. So have a look for what she is mostly wearing and also the clothing style.
