The axe provides 210 strength, to make use of the wands crush damage. If you cannot switch that fast though, even using one of the two in between skills would help.

And also that takes up 4 hotbar slots. I occupy my first page with actually productive gear swaps

Nvm just tested, you can swap out cdr items and still keep the cdr effect. Definitely not recommended for fire mages though. The only real application of a melee build is if you're an ice mage (which already is a step in the wrong direction) with an iceshards cooldown charm and iceblast cooldown brace, ffaing another clan on a necro/mordris (to justify cost of haste). Not by any means a practical build though. And that also leads to the question of whether you're using edl set or not. And whether you're already gear swapping before having to use up more slots for your weps and offhands

It's like switching between an ice and fire hrung helm for extra damage and calling it a new build.

If you go to a boss as a caster with an axe offhand you are truly lost.

Although I'd argue that druids can be decent using an axe offhand ^, due to the nature of the dps skills (dot's account for most of skill dmg) and the lightning strike skulls aren't as useful as the firebolt/shards ones in terms of proportion of max dps gain

I always assume when we talk about battle mage/druid/caster we're referring to leveling/lixing and not bossing.

Many moons ago, when radiant es armor came about, the battle mage build was actually a viable build, even for bossing. I agree though that folks who try the battle mage build probably just want to shake things up during lixing/leveling as it can get boring.

The fact that a battle mage relies heavily on cloak of fire damage, essentially means it's not a bossing build. Folks should stop criticizing it from that perspective.
