Ramblings of an old man

#1
After a long time lurking in the background reading the forums I suddenly have the urge, for some strange reason, to offer up my view of this Celtic world of heroes.

As the title suggests, I'm no spring chicken. I'm also confident I may not be the most senior of citizens. However, I'm willing to bet my physical being has orbited the sun more times than most.

Does any of that matter? No not really, I've met children on this game who show more intelligence and common sense than those whom we vote for to govern our daily lives. Of course, the opposite is also true. Like all things, particularly internet gaming related, there are idiots out there.

Anyway, the real point of this post is to try and offer a matured view of things with regard to the posts about the update.

Firstly, high level players moaning and demanding things to be returned to how they were. I should perhaps point out here my rogue is level 57 and my Druid is level 46.

I can empathise with what seems to be an increased difficulty in mobs and bosses but the mechanics of the game have changed significantly. A big factor of this seems to be the evasion of skills. If you are failing where you once succeeded, try and evaluate why. If you are fighting with your own skill evasion abilities at low levels then why do you think you should stand a chance? To me this seems to be the factor that governs a lot of peoples issues. Again, sympathies for those who are trying to get a new ability up to 1000/1000. It's gonna take a lot of effort and grinding based on my experience but I'm not in the otherworld so don't know what the rate of increase is like there.

Secondly, to everyone who essentially threatens to quit the game because it's too hard or it's not how it was.

This is called development or progress. Not everything is going to be how YOU want it or think it should be. I commend the company for appearing to take some rather abusive posts and offering to possibly resolve some players issues. However, I can't help but think that they have their own vision of how things should be and taking too many player concerns on board will detract from this. Maybe the game would be better off without players whose attitude is like that? If you disagree with the games direction that much maybe you should try and fund and develop a similar project yourself? I don't mean to sound grumpy here, just trying to offer some perspective.

Now, I may contradict myself here slightly. I quite like the added complexity of the game however, this is an idevice app. I don't think things have gone too far but I am a casual player on my phone. A big part of the games charm for me was it's simplicity. If I wanted more of a complex experience I would power up my laptop and play another MMO. If Celtic Heroes became as complex as a 15gb pc game I would be impressed but I'm not so sure that's what I want from an iPhone game. Then again, maybe it would be rather cool.

Am I gutted that my quickstrike doesn't hit all the time and does hardly any damage compared to before? Yes, however, it does kind of make sense. The clue is in the name.

There may well be issues about balancing the power of classes and energy usage but I'm not entirely convinced. Mostly I think people need to evaluate their build somewhat. Decide what they want their character to do and build appropriately and level their abilities. I'm not into pvp really and thought it might ruin the game for me but I've had some fun in the arena with my clanmates. I'm building my Druid as a group healer with slight solo capability and I've obliterated warriors 5 levels higher than me in pvp. I didn't even have to heal myself. The reason? Their build was not great and they haven't levelled their evasion abilities. Kudos to focus powered skills.

Sorry for the long post. Hope I haven't bored you to tears. Hate me, flame me, agree with me. I don't mind.

This post in a few sentences...

The problem isn't always the game. Ever heard of user/operator error? You can't have everything in life handed to you on a plate. Some things take a bit of effort. The human race has essentially got where it is today through trial and error...and none of us are perfect. Cut OTM some slack and rationalise your thoughts before posting aggressive/demanding threads.

Oh, and hello everybody.

You've got the right frame of mind. People are hard to please, and you can't go a day on these forums without seeing that. I'm all for the company's direction. Although, as you kind of implied, they do need some sense of people's input. A company that ignores their community is one thats doomed to fail. A company that relies entirely on the community shares the same fate. But the developers are going down the right path, incorporating rational portions of each. However, the big problem, like you said, is when people don't know how to express their opinions. Demanding and screaming at the developers to change something because it didn't work out for you is the last thing thats going to make anyone want to support you. But if you ask for the cookie saying please, then maybe it will be considered. I feel like this thread has a lot of good ideals, well done.

The appeal of the game for me is the portability. I can pop in and kill a few mobs or work on skills/abilites for a few minutes while I wait in line to get paint matched at Home Depot. Games that require you to be a part of a group in order to advance your character require a much greater investment of time are are more suited for PC.

I sense that a lot of hardcore gamers are driving the developers toward a more PC-like game, and I think it should..to a point.

I do enjoy the new challenge, but when after you've experimented and played new builds (x7) and it takes longer to advance, it gets frustrating and un-fun.
While your clan mates are off fighting bosses, where just a few days before you were an integral part, but now you can't stay alive long enough to be a useful, and stop trying to fight bosses, it becomes demoralizing.

I know the developers are acutely aware of the short comings, but I would urge them not to panic and swing the pendulum too far in the opposite direction (make it too easy).

There is a balance to be found, and I think it's close.

I agree to an extent, but what it has done has essentially made the skill pointless. It is better DOT (damage over time) to simply just auto-attack the monster as a rogue then to use the time it takes for Sneaky Attack, Rend, or Quickstrike, so these really do need adjusting.

I think the players are fine to express their concerns, but a lot of people here are younger and immature and don't approach this matter in the best of ways, which you have pointed out in your post.

All in all, OneThumb is doing a good job, when Admin posts you can tell that he is genuinely concerned about player input and tries to come to a middle ground to meet players wants and the direction that they wish to head in.

One thing that is very different about this game compared to almost every other MMO I have played is this game has built in RWT (Real World Trading) via in app purchases. Many games do not allow RWT of any sort, and the fact that this game uses this to make their money really makes it difficult because players feel that much more that they should have input because they pay XX amount of dollars for the game, and I feel this adds in part to the feelings in where players feel they are obligated to what they want.

Lastly, change is hard for people to deal with. A game they have grown to love has drastically changed and it can be hard to grasp such a huge change and the thing you love feeling so different.

They need to add it back to weapon damage...

Well welcome to the forum but you can not join the old timers club unless you can answer the following question:
  • Have you ever owned an 8 track tape player?
I agree there is a lot of impatience and unnecessary emotion on the forums. Change is difficult. The problem is that unless you spend a lot of platinum the only way to understand a problem is to share what you are experiencing and see if others are seeing the same.

Unfortunately we still appear to be in beta mode. There are so many issues that just haven't been worked out yet. The biggest problem is OneThumbMobile bit off more than it could chew with this update and the issues are all over the place; from bank problems to skills not working.

Again welcome to the forum and please contribute to the individual issues, cogent germane discussion is appreciated.
