I've been trying out the ice built (see other topic) at lvl 67 and I enjoy it greatly. It works great for my lvl.

My current stats:
5
5
er...not sure..3something
10

Point is that I put ALL my points into focus. Even at lvl 67 I have enough vitality to start a fight and cast shield after a few moments.

As Skills I have:
20/20 energy shield
20/20 Ice Shards
13/20 Lure of Ice
10/20 Fire bolt
9/20 Lure of Fire
2/20 Cloak of Fire

I did buy some energy sigils (not very many tho). Id recommend putting some points into meditate. You can cast shield before fight, meditate shortly and then engage.

While a energy/vit built is probably necessary in the otherworld because of how hard mobs hit, in my experience as a lower lvl having a pure focus built and using shield works best. My shield at 10 was enough to survive a fight in stonevale, I only boosted to 20 because of pvp. So, id say when you put your points, take them one at a time, go into a fight and test if you need to put another point into one of the skills.

The most important things are your abilities though. Make sure you max them out in order to gain a max amount of dmg.
Uh Xell, when you say 10 for vit do u really mean 10 or d'you mean? 100 :P
I mean 10 vit (216 HP). I can survive close to one minute against stonevale wisps - enough time to cast my shield. :)

:O. Woah. that's like...geez. Um, 10 vit just sounds like absolutely crazy :P. Must be because I'm a warrior and that in preupdate i was a vit mage lol. Uh so is this 10 vit build is good?
Also, isn't cloak of fire like amazing? Why is yours 2? (Just spitting thoughts here).
Yeah. :?

It was better before the update. Now you only do damage when you get hit. Before you also did damage when you hit with your wand. And it also added to the damage of other skills. Evidently it was considered too powerful. I used to be able to buff the entire group with cloak and everyone would do significantly more damage. Now only the tank gets a buff.

What are you talking about? Cloak has always worked that way. No damage was added to skills nor auto attacks.

Cloak has been limited to only procing when hit by melee. Therefore, when fighting spellcasters it's useless. Otherwise, I find it can add around the same dps as fire bolt against melee mobs.

As for the 10 vit build, works good in stonevale. Once you hit OW, you'll need more HP. I find the 4:1 seems to be enough to keep alive to recast shield as 2 and 3 star mobs tend to break it even when its maxed.

Currently, the mages in this game are not much better than other classes in terms of DPS if better at all.

I have 1.5k HP and 1.7k energy. The eyes in the other world (maybe because they have too much health) are too tough for me. I can kill one at a time if they are 1-2 stars and up to two levels above me. And yet, i must recharge my energy with spells such as sacrifice and meditate then heal my health. Its not worth it.

I have trained with a druid, but come on, half the exp and no more dps. Sure, i am able to kill... But is that what i must resort to? Dont play unless a druid is there for me?

Anyway, mages are great for PvP. If you dont plan to level much, just stick to a PvP build (which i may do if nothing is done).

Here is my reccomendation:

energy shield?

if yes, put in 4 points of focus for every point into vitality. Or every point in focus. I reccommend te 4 and 1 so you don't have to cast e-shield for easy fights.

if no, then 2 points of focus for every 3 points in vitality.

Do I recommend energy shield? yes, max it. Then you have more focus and your spells will do more damage.

Pick fire or ice. Max each skill. Max corresponding lure. No junky builds here like 7 points in one blah.

so.. for a fire mage at level 80; 20/20 energy shield, 20/20 firebolt, 20/20 incinerate, 20/20 lure of fire. No messing around. Nothing else. Use other skills at 1/20. Buy 3 or so sigil packs to regen energy outside battle. Now go and own monsters and all other players :).

Why play a class where skills cost more than other classes for same damage?
Why play a class with no auto attack?
Why play a class with 1/3 the armor?
Why play a caster?

Copy this sig! :)

That strategy works except most mages don't have incinerate yet. Also, should you try to fight something with high resistance to fire, you'll do far less damage. But for general leveling, should work well.

Before the update Cloak was my best weapon. It would add damage to every wand hit. it also would show on the display accompanying a firebolt and ice shards. Perhaps it was a display error but from what showed up over the heads of the mobs cloak was constantly doing damage, unless they skilled you. Now that may have been a display glitch with the skills because I dont remember fellfire getting an extra cloak plus when it fire bolted. But the extra damage to wand hits was my bread and butter. It actually worked well with the Yule Staff. I would do distance fire cloak damage to the connach wizards all the time.

We had this discussion with the beta guys on another thread and they agreed. I will look for it.
