Question is, how many chests did the op open? Was the net worth of items higher than the possible gain if you just sold all your chests for 15-30k.

I'm sure it depends on which world you are on if it's better to sell/open. On Taranis the loot would be worth around 2.5m and the chests sell for 25k so it would be about the same. It comes down to how lucky you get with the mount tokens which are selling for 100k. For small batches like 100 chests it's historically been worth around 15-20k opening and 20-25 sell on Taranis.

The way some make money is to open a large number, like 1000+. Because people who open just 100 or less stand such a small chance at getting a large payout like 2m gold or 1k plat, you can't really expect to add that value to your winnings. If you open thousands you are much more likely to be able to add that value and it really boosts your bottom line per chest with less luck.

If anything the new drop tables seem to push the odds back toward smaller purchases by eliminating rare mounts completely and reducing fashion to tokens. You shouldn't have to open thousands to smooth out the luck enough to get good value.

Some do lol. Also as far as opening a lot, you can always offer gold and hope you can buy enough.
