Discussion of alternate solutions to target lock

#1
I'd like to start a disccusion of alternate solutions to the target lock situation.
BLRD's solution:
The group that holds aggro of the boss for the longest amount of time is awarded the kill. IMO, the group that holds the aggro for the longest amount of time, has put in the most effort and is most deservent of the kill, and drops. Whether it be from Druid heals or pots.

Caliban's Solution:
Award the kill not simply on dps, but on a combination of dps and hatred (aggro).

Marshill Solution:
The first hit gets a big award bonus. An example is if you take a 100 hp monster. Warrior A hits the monster for 1 dmg. He gets the equivalent of doing 26 points of damage to his credit in determining who gets the kill. Warrior B comes in and hits for 51 points. Warrior A does 48 points of damage.

In this situation warrior a did 49 damage and warrior b did 51 damage. Since warrior a got the first hit it is actually like he did 74 points of damage. So he gets the kill.

Papi's Solution:
a different system for different mobs. Papi please post your soution in paragraph form.

Xell's solution
- Only people with an open quest can get frags
- People can only get frags they actually need
- Frags are non-trade

Rejected solutions:

Solution 1:
Make each group have a group leader. The group that has the most damage should have their leader's name appear over the head of the monster. This would eliminate confusion about who has the kill. So a group that has the lower dps can go ahead and stop fighting.

Solution 2:
Change the quests. The currenty quest system requires you to collect a certain amount of items whether it is dragon discs or rems/tabs or crests. People collect the items then trade them. What if you remade the quests. Turn them into kill based quests where you kill falgren a certain number of times or find another creative way around dropped items.

I think the quests should be more elaborate for warden armor anyway. It should be like the lir's quest line where you get a generic armor set. The warden should be a more difficult version of the lir's quest line. Redo the whole warden quest system. You can incorporate the discs into the quest so people don't lose out if they are collecting them.

Solution 3:
install a more complex kill credit system.

solution 4:
some sort of damage reduction for being over 70 levels above a boss.

solution 5:
put bosses on a timed schedule. Spawn pyrus, stonelord, swamp lord, falgren, starspell all at the same time.

solution 6:
reducing the amount of gold certain bosses drop would make them less appealing to higher levels. (The only reason i kill red bosses is because each one drops over 1000 gold. I end up dropping all the loot i get.)

solution 7:
It seems this discussion stems from disputes over dragon discs. So I propose that falgren should be in a separate zone. Make it so only characters with the quest can enter the zone. The zone could be a small sandbox with him and a few other druids.

There is no one single good system. No mater what we come up with, somebody will be upset.
Many MMOs have gone to some sort of KS prevention so it is unreasonable to assume that getting rid of KSing will kill this game.
IMHO the best solution is a mixed approach.

use the first hit lock for anything with 3 stars or less.

Use the existing system for anything with 4 and 5 stars.

For 6 stars use a new system where all contributions are counted, buffs, heals, damage, lures, wards, bolas, smoke, everything, and give everyone who participated a percentage based on how much they contributed.

For all drops, Quest drops would first go to those who have the quest. I agree with Marshall that the quest drop system encourages our current situation.

How's about we just make a list of stuff we want and the next time we log !POOF! We get it.

That'll make y'all happy.

Wait I know - get rid of platinum all together and have the get gold feature just give us gold!

This is ridiculous. Leave the game alone. Change it and we're pretty smart people - well find a way around the changes. I can guarentee I will ks any group there is on a boss if the target lock goes into place. Want to see some upset players? Wait till that happens over and over and over and over...

Who ever does the most damage should get the kill ----> period end of story.

Want to take out the competition aspect? Get rid of clans. People will be forced to use what ever drudge happens to be standing there (unless secondary communication is in place). Then you still have a single group controlling the bosses because once that target is locked - it's theirs.

Here is my alternate solution from the other thread. So far no one has commented on it at all.

Another example would be to award the kill not simply on dps, but on a combination of dps and hatred (aggro). This would mean that someone KSing would actually have to take the risk of being hit in order to KS. They could not simply take advantage of another groups work, but would also have to gain aggro and survive that aggro such that the combo of both accrued aggro and dps were greater than the other party.

This means that the kill reward is in great part based on the groups aggro management skill, rather than a hard wired trigger that can be exploited or solely on the amount of damage done. It still allows a higher level group to dominate a lower level one, which does not solve the monopoly problem, but eliminates a single dps class or small dps team from KS the target since aggro is a function of Taunt and Heals, rather than just dps.

Thinking about it, I like this solution much better than the first hit target lock as it still requires, and even amplifies the competive nature of things, but on a leveld playing field useful to all classes.

I like your drop system.

However I think they should pick one system for the kill awarding and stick with it, to me your suggestion is too complicated, I think it should be the same for every mob or make it where the difference was so intuitive you wouldn't have to rack your brain while playing.

It would be great if the lead programmer (Design?) could comment on whether our ideas are doable or not so we don't waste more time coming up with or restating ideas we got no response on.

Why play a class where skills cost more than other classes for same damage?
Why play a class with no auto attack?
Why play a class with 1/3 the armor?
Why play a caster?

Papi ha good approach but think tanking everything into account on heals etc would be far too much as I know some Druids who can do a decent amount of damage with over 1.1k heal so there would be Druids ksing all the time not rogues

I onestly think that Druids need a damage buff like posion weapon but I duno 3-4 times as strong? And then tanks need a counter attack skill then group who takes most damage gets 20% bonus this would fix a group of rogues ksing easy as the Druid would buff there dpser giving them more dps to keep kill making 2 rogues almost same as 3?
Warrior hits extra from counter att so his dps goes way up and the tanking warrior makes group having 20% bonus on points which means try will more then likely get kill with a group rather then rogues just coming and ksing
