Death Penalty

I'm not really an Off-Topic kind of guy, but I've been pondering this question ever since I was in smaller classes reading Victor Hugo's "Le Dernier Jour d'un condamné" and other influential books from that time period.

The question is as follows:

Why kill someone to show him that he is wrong in killing someone else?

The death penalty should be abolished in my opinion, as no man should have the right to dictate whether another should live or die. The justice system should be in place to punish people (prison or freedom) and that is it.

What are your thoughts?

I am not 100% sure but I think that most countries actually do not have death penalty.

I don't think the death penalty should even be a thing even more, what is this? the dark ages? I mean, you are doing THE SAME THING that they did, does that make you better than them? Why drop to their level, I think a life sentence would be a better fit punishment.

Some people feel killers are not fit to walk the Earth or in society I suppose. I actually think it is an easy way out. A lethal injection not to live with the consequences of what you did even if no remorse. This is a tough one because the other option is jail. Where you get 3 meals a day etc...

For example convicted murderer Charles Manson got married in jail recently at age 79 having served 25yrs so far..

Its a good thing imo. If someone has taken someone elses life, why cant they have as a result their life taken from them? How ever, it could be used wrongly, so i am 50/50 on this situation.

Death penalty is something too serious to be one person's / group's choice. No one can fully understand what happened, no one can understand why it hhappened. I think that when judges etc say that someone must die, they are following their feelings as much as logic. Humans can't be can't be objective about something as important as a murder, so humans shouldn't be able to decide who must/mustn't die.
I'd add that we are never 100% sure that the one who supposedly committed a crime really commuted it. And what would people do if they figure out after his/her death that he/she was innocent ? I think a life is a too high price to remember about mistakes.

Good points and the part about some actually being innocent. So many cases surfacing about people who have done many years and found innocent because DNA/ evidence were overlooked. One of the reasons I'm a forensic major.

I have mixed feeling on this one. I think that if it were my relative harmed I wouldn't want the person responsible to just get life in prison. At the same time I feel with their life taken they don't get to rot over what they did.

There was only one death penalty in Israel ever, but we dont have death penalty here. Im not in favor of death penalty, but the prisons here for criminals and terrorists are way too good.

It is not in our hands or power to decide the fate of someone. That is something only God has the power to do.

Hence why I am against the death penalty.
