Im no pro, but I have experience in every class, as my main is now ranger.
If you rely on auto attacks, I recommend high strength, and usually i see more vit than dex. Useful skills for this is rapid shot, perhaps bolas for soloing or small group bossing, ignore steady aim as it is dex based, ignore sharp shot because it wont do much more damage than your auto attacks, same with barbed. Rest is pretty much up to you, try to avoid mainly dex based skills(of course a lot of people use light heal, I do too). The amount of dex is up to you.
I have not experimented with a dex based ranger, though i'd stay low on strength. Put your dex up pretty high, and more focus too. Max sharp shot and barbed, steady aim, and light heal(optional), bolas also optional(non-dex based).I have no experience with entangle and defensive spikes, but if you use bolas I wouldn't bother with spikes, if you like it then boost your vit a lot(like 1000+ or so) and go on and tank that thing! Entangle is probably more of a strength thing(if its level sensitive to upgrades then yes) so I'd stay away from that.
Last but not least, balanced ranger. You can use a mix of skills, and get an interesting combo. I had another ranger who had pretty much same strength and dex. With bolas and light heal I could stay alive, while dishing out with rapid shot, sharp, steady, or barbed. I had lower vit than you usually would have and higher focus. Though this is a useful type theres a wide selection of skills which I find hard to choose from.
Personally I have about twice as much strength as dex, more vit than dex, and about half as much focus as vit. I use rapid, steady(shouldn't have

gonna use book of alt some time), bolas, and light heal(couldnt resist

). When I get defensive spikes im getting rid of steady(its dex based).
Hope this helped, feel free to correct me on anything as a noob ranger!
