I see lots of rangers bolasing bosses and then doing something which makes the mob walk away from them so they can just attack it, and I was wondering how to do that

If its name is yellow start inside the green circle on the ground. Throw bolas.- I find knucks to work best while doing this cause you get more hits before you have to walk again.- the boss will go a direction and as long as you stay near the green circle (which always moves away from you for steering purposes) and maintain bolas you will be good to go!

As far as red named bosses go, I get as close as possible cast bolas and while its casting its first spell on me run under it. As long as you survive the first impact and you get in position same rules apply.

I find it handy to have a ranger buddy with the same level bolas as yours because if yours misses he can throw and it wont be resisted.

Heh hEH...you need high level bolas to have a real influence so it just doesn't walk so fast you cant catch up with the green circle. So for level 70s about.
