How much attack is too much?

#1
This morning, I set out to make some progress towards figuring out how different amounts of attack affect accuracy. Instead of trying to guess my characters exact accuracy, which is really impossible since half of your accuracy is determined by the mob you are attacking, so I simply decided to compare the differences in accuracy against Garanak's adds (level 190 4*s). (A little disclaimer: I am a 194 ranger, so I am not sure if attacking mobs 4 levels beneath me may make my results a little off.) I started out by attacking 1000 times and tallying my hits and misses at 4.5k attack, I did the same for 4k attack before growing extremely bored. For the other attack ratios, I shot between 500-800 arrows and simply divided to get the correct percentage of hits.
I thought others might benefit from seeing how I have found different amounts of attack affect their chance to hit.
My results are as follows:

4502 attack : 92.6% accuracy
4071 attack : 92.0% accuracy
3540 attack : 89.1% accuracy
2990 attack : 88.4% accuracy
2540 attack : 85.3% accuracy

Ultimately, I got what I was looking for. In the past I have been told that having more than 4k attack is a waste, and it appears that the are correct.
When I first started wondering how much attack is too much, I found very little to help answer my question. I think ill stick with keeping 4.5k attack, just because I don't have a way to convert it to damage, but others may find it useful to know how much their accuracy can improve by adding 500 attack.

Again, another reminder that the statistics shown are not exactly what your accuracy would be if you have the same attack. This was simply to find the margin of accuracy between differing amounts of attack based on a single mob type.

More information:
The difference between 3k attack and 4k attack is a 3.6% increase in accuracy (against Garanak's adds at least), so...
You can figure out how much damage would make up for that based on:
3.6*(auto attack damage) :this finds how much overall damage you lose
take that number, and divide by 3k accuracy: 88.4 :this is how much damage needs to be added to each attack in order to maintain the same overall dps if you had 4k

For example, if someone wanted to find how much damage would make up for losing 1k attack from 4.5k to 3.5k: (ill say they have 2.5k auto attack damage)
92.6-89.1 = 3.5 (subtracting the difference between 4.5k attack and 3.5k attack
3.5*2500 = 8750 (so 8750 is the approximate damage lost over 100 hits by having 3.5k attack instead of 4.5k)
8750/89.1 = ~98 (so if you hit 98 more damage on the ~89 hits that are not avoided, you make up for having 1000 less attack than someone else with 4.5k)

Another way to apply this:
Lets say there are two people:
Person A has 2500 damage and 2.5k attack
Person B has 2200 damage and 4.5k attack
Who deals the most damage (Against Garanak's mobs at least, since that is where the data points come from)?

Simply multiply the damage done by the percent of hits for the matching attack amount:
A: 2500 * 85.3 = 213250
B: 2200 * 92.6 = 203720

It's a close call, but even though Person B has 2000 more attack than Person A, in the long run: Since Person A deals an extra 300 damage, they do almost 10000 more damage than Person B
So in this specific situation, 300 damage > 2000 attack

Id say 3k attack is fine. Im a mage but my 3100 ice magic chance to hit is about equal to 3100 attack, and i rarely miss. Also from 3 to 4k in the data doesnt add much of a percent, id stick to 3 :) Also i think its really awsome you did this testing, nice job

If you can get good gear that just doesn't add attack but other things then you can never have enough attack. Raid bosses are much different then normal mobs so that percentage may be accurate but I'm sure it isn't the accuracy you would have on a raid boss.

^This.^

Raid bosses apparently have a massive amount of defense, which is why some DPS players choose to have a massive amount of attack.

Superb job with the testing by the way. Keeping track of thousands of auto hits is no easy task.

Suggest u test this on necro to see how much attack is enough.

Excellent post. Should be an eye opener to people obsessed with attack.
Soo, is attack not as important as people think on levelling mobs (not raid bosses)?

Yes, depending on your attack, simply adding damage is way more effective than attack.
If you can choose between 500 attack, or 100 damage... damage all the way. <-those numbers aren't perfect, but you get what I mean.
