I can think of a couple reasons why players would want to be able to do this. I would like to be able to put both gold and plat in the bank.
1. It minimizes mistakes in trade. If you have a lot of gold, it is possible to accidentally add a zero when buying something from another player. Of course the responsibility is the player's, but if they could limit the amount of money they carry they wouldn't have to worry about making a large mistake entering a number.
2. It easily allows one to know how much they made that day. If you deposit all your gold in the bank before or after training (starting balance of zero) you can quickly see how much gold you made in one hour of training. As it is now, you have to jot down your starting balance, subtract that from your ending balance. Not terribly difficult, but money in the bank would make it easier.
3. For people who like to upload screenshots to the forums or a Clan Facebook account, it would allow you to keep your wealth (or lack thereof) secret. I often see screenshots of someone's stat page, and can see how much plat and gold they have. unless you want to Shop the photo, this would allow one to screenshot without worrying about being asked for gold.
4. To curb spending (Edit per Lady R's post). The same way that some people leave their credit apples at home irl, if you could keep the majority of your gold in the bank, you would be less inclined to make impulse purchases.
But hey, at least Celtic isn't like Everquest... in that game your money counted toward your weight. If you had too much cash you walked at a snail's pace.
For fast travel, just spend 30 minutes in Crookback farming mining picks, or buy leystone frags off a player.
