Re: Death Penalty

Do you know what prisons are like?
They are in pretty poor condition, Especially private prisons that are not regulated by the government (crazy stuff happens in there rape, abuse, etc)
The USA is running a fairly large deficit leading to worse and worse prisons. It comes down to spending.
IMO if it is sure that an individual committed a crime related to murder, rape, kidnapping, terrorism should be given the death penalty.
(defending yourself is not murder)

Other crimes relating to theft, fraud, and other petty crimes should land you a prison sentence, and you should be offered help to get on your feet and make sure you dont get out and do what you were doing before.

Some crimes shouldn't even be considered crimes (possession of drugs)
Prisons are very crowded and we get all sorts of criminals mixed up from your guy that stole some cheese to that man who committed man slaughter
Lets not turn to personal attacks

I am against the death penalty for a few reasons
-many people who commit murder are mentally unwell, as a socialist i believe that if someone mentally ill has come to this point, it is society failing that individual.
- many people are later proven innocent after being convicted, which has led to innocent people being executed in the past
- death is an easy way out, i see the death penalty as a way for countries such as america to avoid the cost of housing inmates. Again as a socialist, doesnt sit well with me
- killing another human being does not always make you a bad person per say. For example, the city i live in is run by organized crime, italian mob and hells angels bikers. Both groups are responsible for murders, but only people who have gone out of their way and caused issues for these groups. Law enforcement is never touched by these groups and both large crime organizations contribute heavily to aiding families and children in poverty. Once again a socialist view lol

I think its remarkable that i as a socialist agree that the death penalty is wrong with many conservative christians but for completely different reasons
-Did society fail them or did they fail society. There may be a correlation. But ill be honest, if a mentally ill man killed my family ya I'd want him dead :|
-This is the only part that gets me. While some may deserve to die you cant be 100% sure. But again prisons are in pretty poor condition maybe death is an easy way out if your innocent.
-Where do you live? :P anyway i don't think you have to assemble a group of thugs to help out the children :P

Isn't it exactly one of the problem ? You WANT him dead. There isn't fairness there, and this is dangerous. What you want is not always the best way, that's what I said with my example of the mother who tells her child to stop playing ch.

Criminals are as human as we are, even if many of us doesn't want to accept that. Killing them, even if we pretend that is fair, is still killing a human. And the ones who have to kill them are hurted because they did kill a human.
One of the basic things in a big part of the world is that humans are free and were all born equal. If your life depends of other people's choice, I'm not sure you are free.

Please don't make that mistake. Religion and politics aren't the same things and shouldn't be linked like that.

Well ik that but u know we treasure our soldiers.

Btw the death penalty that happened in Israel was Adolf Eichmann's, and what he said is 'All I did was following orders'.

I had a few time free today and i had nothing to do so i tried to make an essay x) I'm not native english speaker so instead of telling me i'm bad, please tell me my mistakes :)

I will explain why, according to me, death penalty shouldn't be applied.

I Why do i think that death penalty is bad ?

1 Liberty isn't respected

Two of the human rights are that every human is free and that everyone was born equal.
Are criminals an exception ? We could say they are, because they are in jail, and it doesn't look like liberty.
But they are still free to believe in what they want, to think about whatever they want. Who would steal this liberty ? It wouldn't be a human act.
It is the same thing for death penalty. Criminals aren't allowed to think at all ( of course, theyare dead ... ). By killing them, we steal theirlast part of humanity, we act like they are bad items we don't want to have to manage with.
I'm not sure that anyone needs deserves that.

2 Death penalty is a murder

No matter what the criminals did, when someone kills someone else, it is called a murder. ( Some people may say theydeserved it, I will talk about it later ). It is even more sadistic because the criminal knows he will die, and we don't even give him a chance.
Someone has to kill the criminal, and this person will be hurted because taking one's life is never an easy things. But there is worse : the one who kills may get used to killing people he believes are bad persons. If he can do it here, why can't he do it outside ? Everyone could get lost like that, and accidents may happen, even though it's unprobable.

II How can we define a criminal ?

1 Human

Criminals are humans, like you and I. It is hard to accept but it is true. Have you ever slapped someone, because you were mad ?
It is the same thing for many ( not all ! ) murderers, but with stronger feelings. Do they deserve death because their feelings were too strong and make them forget reason their reason ? I'm not sure of it, because it happened to everyone at least once ( I am talking about too strong feelings, not murders ).

2 psychological problems

Many criminals have psychological problems. Some of you may say " kill them and the problem will disapear ". But it doesn't work like that. One month, one year, one decade after, someone will have the same problem. And then what ? He kills someone else and we kill him ?
Or we can try to heal the first one, to understand how and why it happened. And we could find a way to prevent other people like this person from doing commiting a crime. Isn't it better ?

III Why aren't we able to decide who must die ?

1 " They deserve it ". We aren't objective part 1.

I read many people saying " they deserve it " but these three words are exactly the reasons why we shouldnt kill them, we are following our feelings, not logic.
An example : I guess everyone has heard about Malala Yousafzai. Well, don't you think that the ones who shot he in the head said that she deserved it ? But is it true ?

2 We aren't objective, part 2

We don't feel ok thinking that murderers are humans, that's a fact. But violence is a part of the human kind. And killing the ones who acted more than others wo't make it disappear.
I'll use the example I did already use : Your mother(/father/wife/husband...) comes in your room and tells you that you have something important to do. But you are in a boss fight and she/he annoys you. So you just want him/her to disappear or to let you alone. Is that a good choice ? Do you really think that he/she must disappear ? No.
Well, it's the same thing about murderes : you want them to disappear but it isn't a solution.

3 Religion

I'll talk about it quickly, because I know many people don't like religion.
Most of the religions have one thing in common : life is sacred. Our life has been given to us by God, and taking our/ someone's life isn't right.

4 Innocence
We are never 100 % sure someone is guilty. What if we found out someone is innocent, but after his death ?

To conclude, I believe ( not saying you must think I al right ! this is a debate ) that death penalty is a threat to humanity, because it hurts the criminal ( who is human and can be hurted ! ), the one who kills him and everyone else. And because death penalty can't be fairly applied as long as humans can't be fully objective.

I see it as a deterrent. Not a very effective one but it might make a person think twice before committing crime. Yes I am against it as humans have no right to decide who lives or dies.

Re: Death Penalty

If the death penalty is wrong because no human should ever take another human's life, then you would not only have to get rid of executioners, but also disband the army, take away police sidearms, destroy the nuclear arsenal, etc.

Some people are OK with a soldier killing a terrorist to protect his/her country, yet reject the notion that the worst criminals ought to receive the death penalty.

Wasn't that a nazi?
I read a book about him
EDIT:
Adolf eichmann.
Important nazi general, was in charge of how the nazis died.
Book:
The nazi hunters
By: Neal bascomb
"How a team of spies and survivors captured the worlds most notorious nazi"
He had a fair trial.
He had a lawyer
People testified
The judges name was Moshe landau
He got kille from a hanging, ten foot drop.
There were two buttons, hit at the same time.
That was to protect the minds I the people that hit it.
They don't know which button worked.
When they were cremating his body, he fell on the floor.
A survivor of the camps lifted his sleeves, and dumped the body in.
He had an aushwitz tattoo.
His daughter and parents were killed there.
Haha I started ranting... Sorry!

its situational, the issue with criminals is that sometimes years later it is found they are innocent, or they are mentally unwell in the first place. it i absolutely unethical to kill a mentally unwell person as (in my view) it is society's job to take care of such people in the first place. to allow someone to become so unwell that they kill other people, is society's failure.
